330 Veneer layers, glass and light / 2010 / 28 x 23 x 24 cm
A sculpture incorporating the image of the lighthouse with the figure of the artist (my own).
Like the role of the lighthouse’s keeper, the artist’s role involves fulfilling a social function. Both have a similar purpose: to preserve the light – the keeper illuminates the way home, whereas the artist illuminates and offers people new perspective, understanding and awareness.
The sculpture is a model of a planned large scale sculpture, made of 330 hand-cut layers of veneer. The different shades of veneer layers bring to mind geologic layers or the depiction of altitude in maps.
The head of the sculpture contains a flashing light like that of a real lighthouse.
